Sheplegh Court is a country estate set deep in the South Hams countryside near Dartmouth.  The house and outbuildings have been converted to provide approximately 15 apartments within the seclusion of 30 acres of garden, woods and park land.

There are records of a property occupying the site since 326AD.  The present house was built by the Ridgeway family in 1837.  In 1944 it became the headquarters of General Eisenhower during rehearsals in Start Bay for the D-day landings.  It was the venue for a famous planning meeting between Eisenhower, Churchill, De Gaulle and Montgomery.

Our apartment is at the top of the house and has wonderful views of the gardens, ponds and swimming pool (approx 100 metres away).  It is very secluded and quiet (hence the name "Retreat") with birds making the most noise! 

Outside the grounds are quite stunning.  There is a conservatory that visitors are welcome to use, a large heated swimming pool during summer months and a small heated dip pool and sauna inside the house.

In addition to the apartment there is a conservatory with wonderful views of the Sheplegh grounds that visitors are welcome to use.

The apartment is painted white, the carpets are dark cream, and the furnishings are blue/white so it is very bright and airy. It has a large lounge/dining room, approx 20' x 16'.  There is a TV, DVD/video recorder The kitchen is linked through an archway and has a fridge/freezer, fan oven and electric hob, dishwasher and microwave. There are two double bedrooms.  One has a very comfortable 5' divan bed which is on a raised platform, the other has two single beds that can be zipped together to make another double if required.  The family bathroom contains WC, handbasin and bath/overhead shower.

 

The tennis court is available for use.  There is not a booking system, it is rarely busy at Sheplegh and people are expected to be considerate of others needs and negotiate times if necessary.

At the top of the property are Sheplegh Woods, a brilliant place for the youngsters to explore.

Dartmouth is a beautiful town with facilites for leisure sailing, cruise ships, a theatre, hotels and restaurants and other attractions. These include the famous steam railway across the river at Kingswear and art exhibitions and galleries.

Annual Events: To see what is on in Dartmouth, consult the www.discoverdartmouth.com where they list the numerious events and activities. These include a Comedy Festival 6-10 March; Dart Music Festival 11-13 May; Regatta week 30 Aug - 1 Sept

Recommended Places to Eat Out: The area has a number of fine dining restaurants as well as excellent pubs serving food, these include The George Inn, Blackawton Restaurant Angelique, Dartmouth The Seahorse, Dartmouth (run by Mitch Tonks) The Start Bay Inn, Start Bay, next to the beach and featured in Rick Steins programme highlighting the excellent quality of their fish and chips!

Local Sports: At Sheplegh Court there is a warm outdoor pool in the summer months, a tennis court and snooker room. Dartmouth Golf Club is a couple of miles away.

Blackawton

Blackawton is a picturesque village set in the rolling hills of the South Hams, there is a church and two good pubs. It is 4 miles from the seaside town of Dartmouth where there are numerous activites.
