The skiing season begins in Zakopane from the end of December onwards. There are excellent skiing and snow boarding facilities for all levels of expertise, with around 50 ski lifts available in the Zakopane area. A cable car runs up Kasprowy Wierch (1,985 m), the most popular and nearest mountain destination for skiers, about 3 Km out of town. Unfortunately, there are also reports of severe overcrowding, resulting in long queues and wasted time. Any taxi driver will take you to a ski slope. The next closest are at Gubalowka and Nosal. We met English tourists, who did not speak any Polish at all but just stood by the side of the road with their snowboards and were taken to the nearest slopes by a taxi driver who just stopped for them.

Public and private buses and mini buses also do the ski slopes run for a small minimal fee.

It's best to get a snow report from the Tourist Office or the Ski Schools before you go because conditions will be variable.

Ski Schools:

Skiing is extremely cheap in Poland compared with skiing in the Alps and many other countries but the runs are shorter and conditions not quite as salubrious. However, we came across a few Poles who were going skiing in Slovakia, across the border, because it's even cheaper there and the mountains are slightly higher. It really all depends on whether you want to pay three times as much for better runs and conditions. It's good value for families giving their children the opportunity to learn at the ski schools and for those to whom skiing represents only a small part of their holiday in Zakopane.

Additional thrills on the Gubalowka slope can be had from sledging down a 750 m metal slide, called a rynna, in a special sledge at speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour.

Rabka is known as the 'town of the world's children'. It's built around a large central park with childrens area, tennis courts, coffee shop, paths and mountain bike trails. There are 3 ski slopes in winter, toboggan run and an ice skating rink. In summer enjoy horse and cart rides, swimming pools, Rabkoland funfair.

Bus fare into Krakow is just 9 zl each way (takes just over an hour), much less to Zakopane.
