| The unit of currency in Poland is
the zloty, each of which consists of 100 groszy. Ths will change to the Euro in a few years time.
Money can be changed into zlotys at
most banks and at the plentiful Kantor's in Zakopane's high street. The exchange rates are
displayed in a prominent position inside or outside.
You should also be able to withdraw
money using plastic debit or credit cards from the various ATMs in Zakopane. We had to pay
a small charge for the exchange using a debit card. This is standard irrespective of the
amount of money withdrawn. The menu of the 'hole in the wall' machine is not particularly
easy to use, especially when the different amounts that can be withdrawn are displayed. We
found it easiest to select 'other amount' and to enter the exact amount in zlotys that we
required.
Credit cards are generally accepted
by most shops, restaurants and hotels.
The cost of living is lower in
Poland than in most western countries, therefore your money will go much further.
Do be sensible
with your holiday money - it's easy to make mistakes in a currency
that you're not used to. Avoid exposing your money to pickpockets
- keep it in a money belt or other secure place.
