Information Tourist
information is quite easy to find once you're in Zakopane. You will find information
leaflets in the Tourist Offices and in the larger hotels. The staff in the tourist offices
speak English in addition to certain other languages, and will be able to provide you with
details of events, trips and a map. There is also a touch screen information system in
Zakopane high street that displays basic information.
The high street in town is
pedestrianised and this where you will find both tourists and locals strolling up and down
at all hours. It boasts a large number of places to eat, several hotels, and many shops of
all types.
The weather
The Polish climate is typically
continental with warm summers and cold winters. However, be warned, Zakopane is very green
for a good reason. Pack waterproofs is you plan to do a lot of walking otherwise you may
have to resort to purchasing the local, gaudy, plastic macs which make everyone look like
giant walking bin bags!
Phoning Home
If you don't have a mobile phone,
purchase a telephone card to use in the public phones. You can purchase these from the
numerous kiosks that also sell many daily essentials. Ask for a 'kartka telefoniczna'.
Phoning from
inside Poland
Dial 0, followed by the area
code, then the local telephone number. The area code for Zakopane is 165. You will
see many numbers in Zakopane starting with 0 165 followed by 5 digits.
Points to note
about time
The 24 hour
clock is generally used. In English we tend to say 'half past the
hour', in Poland it's' half to the hour'.
