Rochester, on the River Medway in north Kent is most famous for its annual Dickens Festival. Charles Dickens lived at Gad's Hill in Rochester until his death and associations with Dickens can be seen in many parts of the town. There is a museum to the life and works of Charles Dickens at Eastgate House in the High Street, one of many fine period buildings
There are several interesting shops in the Victorian High Street including a doll's house shop and old-fashioned style sweet shop complete with jars of sweets in the window. An attractive street for a stroll, there are Tudor and other historic buildings to enjoy. You may also want to take a short detour to view the Corn Exchange and some of the remaining city walls.
Rochester Castle was erected by William the Conqueror. The 113 ft high keep remains and is being preserved by English Heritage. Visitors are welcome to climb the stairs to the top of the keep for superb views of Rochester, Rochester Cathedral and the River Medway on payment of a small entrance fee. The castle is surrounded by pleasant gardens, popular with visitors.

Rochester Cathedral, England's second oldest cathedral, was founded by St. Augustine and dates back to 604 AD. It houses the first real fresco painted in an English cathedral for 800 years and several ancient manuscripts. It is surrounded by lawned gardens in which the ruins of the former monastery and cloisters can be seen.
There are plenty of tea shops, pubs, cafes, public toilets and car parks for visitors. Other places to visit nearby include Owletts National Trust property, Cobham Hall and New College in Cobham, Bluewater shopping centre, Chatham historic dockyard, and Upnor Castle - a 10 minute drive from Rochester city centre.
