Some good news
about living in South Woodham is that when residents feel
the need for a larger home, they quite often buy another property
in South Woodham Ferrers rather than moving away.

Most housing is
on well designed estates, albeit with rather small gardens. Most of the older properties,
with larger gardens, are to be found along Hullbridge Road, Clements Green Road areas.
The first new housing estate was
built at Fennfields Road, behind the Whalebone pub. If you want a standard three to four
bedroomed detached or semi-detached family home, then look out for houses on the market in
this area. They tend to represent much better value for money in terms of floor
space and spaciousness than the more stylish homes in the south of the town, nearer the
river.
There
are some very attractive houses off of Inchbonnie Road, set in leafy, tree lined roads
which look wonderful in the summer. Certain houses in the Celeborn Street area look
out over the river, others in Creek View Road have lovely views of the park (shown on
left, in winter) to the front. You will find some highly desirable modern properties in
this part of town.
Some roads have very quaintly, been
named after characters in The Hobbit, by Tolkein. You will come across Gandalf's
Ride, Benbow Drive and others. This has recently attracted some
interest because of the 'Lord of the Rings' film. Some residents
have received phone calls from Tolkein fans from as far afield as
Japan.
The Railway Station is located in
the north west corner of the town, although it is feasibly within walking distance of all
sections of the town. There are also some short cuts to the station via the network of
paths/cycle lanes.
Sheltered housing for the elderly
is available at the Hamilton Court complex in Benbow Drive. Tel: 01245 323743

Colour Coding of Recycling Bins
The
residents of South Woodham Ferrers were originally asked to pilot
a recycling scheme which involved 3 wheelie bins and a sack for
paper being supplied to each house and several rules related to
their permitted contents.
Brown wheelie bins were for
bio-degradabale items like garden waste, green boxes for aluminium
cans, glass and textiles (separately bagged), white sacks for paper,
black wheelie bins for everything else. The scheme proved
successful and was extended throughout the county. Additional collections
for plastic have also been introduced.
All parts of the UK will
have to recycle to meet EU targets so it's a case of making a little
extra effort to improve the environment.
There is also a Recycling
Centre on the edge of town near the Fenn.
Details of the scheme are
available on the Chelmsford
County Council website. Do please write in with your tips
on how to best organise your rubbish. One problem is 'where do you
store it in the kitchen before taking it out to the bins outside?'.
