| Several charity groups
are active in the town. This is just a small selection, but send in details and they
will be published in turn. Amnesty International
(AI)
The South Woodham Ferrers
AI group has folded. The nearest Amensty International group can
be found in Chelmsford.
Bliss
Bliss Trading Post used to
run two second-hand shops in the centre of town, tucked away in
Chipping Row, one selling adult clothing, the other recycling children's
toys, books, clothing and other paraphernalia. It was a great place
for buying almost new kids items.
Since Bliss is no longer
present in Chipping Row, another great place for buying secondhand
children's toys and clothes is the Lazy Bones car boot sale on Sundays,
12.00 noon onwards on the old A130 at Rettendon.
Farleigh Hospice
The Farleigh Hospice thrift shop is located in 18
Market Square opposite the Oakland Hotel. It stocks books, bric-a-brac, clothes and
just about everything. It's always worth a look, you might just come across a bargain.
St. John's Ambulance
Fair weather or foul, St. John's Ambulance
volunteers are always on hand to assist with illness and injuries at all large public
events. A well-deserved thank you is definitely in order.
Society for the Protection of the Unborn
Child (SPUC)
The SWF branch of this charity
holds monthly meetings in members' homes to plan fund-raising and
public awareness events. They also host an annual sherry party
in early December that is worth getting tickets for. Famous guest
speakers are invited each year - Ann Widdecombe was one such
speaker. Another notable event is their Yard & Boot sale,
held during the summer, plus many other fund-raising events throughout
the the year including collections at churches! Call Colin and Sylvia
