Pet friendly self-catering holiday accommodation, in the UK / Great Britain
from Country Cottages Online
Most of us hate the
idea of leaving pets behind or at the kennels. Some pets will grieve for the entire
holiday and often sulk for days following your return - and who can blame them! The idea
of being able to take your pet on holiday sounds attractive. Well, the good news is that
if you stay in self-catering accommodation then you often can. Self-catering
accommodation of all types abounds. There are the traditional stone built
country cottages with roses rambling over the porch, modern bungalows,
converted farm buildings, crofts and even castles. The choice is is
yours and with it comes freedom.
A self-catering holiday
cottage where pets are welcomed could be a boon. Dogs are generally used to
travelling in a car and can be taken on holiday without too much bother. You will need to
ensure a supply of drinking water and occasional stops for your pet.
Do give some thought to your
destination and what you plan to do there. A sheep chasing dog in the countryside is not
welcomed by anyone, nor is a dog that gets left behind to cause damage in a cottage
because he's not used to being left for lengthy periods whilst you visit the local
attractions.
Most dog owners are very
responsible people and will not allow their dog to cause damage or mess. Many cottage
owners who welcome pets will have experience of keeping pets themselves and be
sympathetic. They may even have additional facilties for them. They will be able to advise
you about the best places to walk your dog and of a suitable vet in case of emergency.
Of course it is possible to take
other types of pets on holiday with you but it is not always advisable. Cats do not
respond well to change and may escape in a strange environment. The factors to consider
are:
- the well-being of your pet
- possible damage to the cottage
- effect on your enjoyment
- cost of leaving your pet behind
If taking your pet will cause you
undue stress then leave it suitably provided for at home. You can always ring to enquire
about its welfare. And, if you plan to take any other pet on holiday apart from a dog, do
check with the owners of the property first.

Pet friendly self catering
accommodation with swimming pools
It's always nice to have a swimming
pool, either for your own use or shared, to lounge beside on a hot day, with the
occasional dip to cool off. It also offers the chance to become a little fitter during
your holiday with a daily swim.
A swimming pool is a great boon for
families with children. They will splash, swim and play for hours on end. Give
them a few water toys and they're in the element. Safety is a prime consideration and even
if your children are good swimmers it is still essential to supervise them in the pool.
Remember to use plenty of sunscreen
whilst swimming. Britain is not famous for its sunshine, but even in Britain it is
possible to burn quite easily, and especially when wet.
The pool at Lodge
in Devon, in
the south west of England offers a pool among other superb facilities. It sleeps 4 - 6
Whether it's home from home or an
indulgence in a little opulence, enjoy a short break or even longer in a luxury
self-catering cottage.
It's a delight to stay in a
beautiful house with truly comfortable beds, linen sheets, and tasteful furnishings. The
decor will add to your enjoyment and you may even acquire one or two ideas to apply in
your own home.
Self-catering
allows you the freedom to choose what you do and when, to eat out or eat in. Even if you
decide to eat in, you don't necessarily have to spend hours in the kitchen cooking.
Supermarkets stock a large selection of read-made meals, so that with a little preparation
all you need to do is to heat or microwave according to instructions.
Select your holiday
cottage carefully, bearing in mind the type of people you will be staying
with. A week in the country with a group of friends sounds wonderful but will you all get
on and be able to cope with that length of time together? It might be wise to invite
certain people for a couple of days at a time so that you can enjoy their company briefy
and avoid the boredom or conflict that could ruin an entire week.
Preparation is the key to getting
the most out of your holiday. Find out everything that you can about
places to visit, places to eat and drink, local amenities and events.
Whatever your reason for choosing a
self-catering cottage with a swimming pool, we wish you a very happy and safe holiday!
