There's nothing like the
thrill of cycling downhill with the wind in your hair, or leisurely pedaling your way down
country lanes, taking in the view. Although many parts of south east and middle England
have too much traffic for safe cycling, there are parts of the country where you can cycle
in relative safety. Some railway tracks have been converted into dedicated cycle
ways which is probably the ideal way for families with children to take to the road.If you're
looking for a country cottage with quiet roads suitable for cycling, you could consider
these:
Mountain Bikers, look no further! Bridleways galore on the fells surrounding
Sedbergh, Cumbria and secure space inside the property to park your muddy steeds if they survive your exploits. Loads of shower and bathing facilities and a warm fire to revive you; then of you can't be bothered to cook in the well equipped kitchen, the best pub in town is 50 yards away. You need The House at
Fell House
for your cycling holiday. Tel: Steve on 01858 555476, or email Steve@higround.co.uk
For exercise with style,
charming, early 18th Century, Whitfield House Cottage (shown on left, 3 bedrooms) also in
County Durham, is located in a conservation area but only minutes away from the
countryside and mountain biking or walking.
The delightful thing about East Anglia, at least for the casual cyclist,
are the gentle hills! A quiet country lane is never far away so you can enjoy the peaceful roads and landscapes as you make steady progress towards your destination. Whether that be Beccles to spend a while by the River
Waveney, the fine Cathedral City of Norwich, the Castle at Framlingham or wherever takes your fancy!
9 Park Lane (sleeps 11) in the more salubrious part
of Southwold, Suffolk. It's a 17th Century beamed
cottage with loads of character and just a short walk from
the mile of beach which stretches from the newly extended pier
to the harbour. The beach varies from season to season,
sometimes shingle sometimes sand. The pier end has traditional
beach huts and promenade while the harbour end has a wide
expanse of beach backed by sand dunes ideal for picnics and
sunbathing. You can also take the small row boat ferry across
the river to Walberswick and enjoy the beach there.
Walberswick is the site of the annual crabbing
competition. This cottage has the optional advantage of
its own beach hut. Telephone

Primrose Cottage in Suffolk is in
a rural location with quiet roads round about. It's a pretty timber framed 18th century
cottage situated in the quiet village of Bredfield, two miles north of Woodbridge and is
ideally located to explore the Suffolk Heritage coastline, an area of varied landscape
with 5 rivers, forests, heathlands, marshlands, ideal for sailing, cycling, walking, bird
watching and riding. Situated on the banks of the river Deben, Woodbridge is an excellent
centre with its historic Tide Mill, marina and the Anglo Saxon burial ground of Sutton
Hoo. The famous Maltings Concert Hall is also close by in the village of
Snape.
The reduced number of cars mean
that even driving is a pleasure in Scotland, but cycling is a definite joy and a wonderful
way of seeing the countryside. If you visit popular tourist areas like Tayside, or
Speyside, you will find cycle hire shops where you can rent your bike/tandem/mountain bike
on an hourly or daily basis. Lots of self-catering holiday
accommodation available.

Another beautiful spot with a superb recreational/cycle trail is
to be found in the Camel Valley, near Bodmin in Cornwall. The Camel trail is a former
railway line conversion to provide almost 17 miles of walk and cycle
path through the Cornish countryside. It is safe for families
and traffic free allowing you to enjoy nature at it's best.
Poldue Farm
is set at the top of a secluded valley one field away from Bodmin
Moor where ponies roam and graze freely. It's a semi-detached
farmhouse with a large garden with evidence of Cornish pixies.
There are 2 bedrooms, each sleeping 2 people, plus an optional
sofabed in the hall. The farmhouse is just 20 minutes away
from the Eden Project and is a good base for exploring Cornwall. There
are views of both coasts on a clear day.
