The
Eden project
A
hugely successful attraction, the
Eden Project is the largest greenhouse in the world.
Built inside a disused china clay pit, visitors can expect to experience
a tropical rain forest and temperate zones within the structure
that occupies a site as large as 35 football pitches. The greenhouse
is split into two biomes, the tropical section full of exotic plants
from the Amazon jungle, Africa, Malaysia and Oceana, including
over thirty varieties of banana palm, mango, teak and mahogany.
In
the tropical biome, visitors can walk through pineapple, rubber and sugar cane
plantations, and paddy fields. There is even a river and waterfall.
The
delights of a temperate Mediterranean like climate await in the other biome where visitors
will be enchanted with the scent of citrus blossom, orange and lemon trees.
The
project is the brainchild of Tim Smit who won Lottery funding and then commissioned
Nicholas Grimshaw, architect of the Eurostar Terminal at Waterloo in London to design it.
The
British love gardens and plants of all kinds. Put the
Eden Project at the top of your list of places to visit in Cornwall
but be prepared for lengthy queues at times - it's a popular visitor
attraction.
